SUNDAY 12th January - 1.30-2.30pm - Art Beat
Adam McGrath is a resident of the port town of Lyttelton Harbour. He writes and sings folk songs for a living as the lead singer of The Eastern. With his comrades in The Eastern he spends most of his time traversing the lowlands, highlands and highways of the shaky isles of NZ and parts across the sea. He believes in spirit, hope, kindness and bare knuckle thinking aswell as the majesty of Smokey Robinson, Barry Saunders and The Clash.
McGrath's work with The Eastern needs little introduction to Kiwi fans of foot stomping folk music and barrooms. This relentless ensemble is continually described as NZ’s hardest working band.
Three albums in and with a reputation as a fierce and heart swelling live draw, 2012 has seen the band already ticking off four months of touring around NZ and Australia. They’ve supported and toured with the likes of Fleetwood Mac, Steve Earle, Old Crow Medicine Show, Jimmy Barnes, Trinity Roots, The Warratahs and Louisiana’s own Li’l Band o Gold.
Their latest album ‘Hope & Wire’ entered the NZ charts at #11, peaked at #2 and reached number #1 on iTunes NZ. The album has gathered kind reviews everywhere including 4 stars from the UK’s Q magazine and 5 stars from the NZ Herald.
